Container Handler Inspections

Thorough Examinations are essential for Container Handlers’ safety and efficiency. Identifying and addressing hazards promptly ensures their continued safe and effective use.

Comprehensive Guide to Container Handlers Thorough Examinations

Container Handlers, including Reach Stackers and Empty Container Handlers, are among the largest and most critical vehicles inspected at Statutory Inspections. With the capability to lift loads of up to 45 tonnes, these machines are integral to time-sensitive operations, emphasising the importance of maintaining their full operational and safety integrity daily. Our Thorough Examinations are designed to ensure that these equipment are not only legally compliant under LOLER and PUWER regulations but also guarantee the safety of operators, bystanders, and the equipment itself, regardless of usage hours.

Importance of Thorough Examinations for Container Handlers

Regular Thorough Examinations play a vital role in upholding the safety and operational efficiency of Container Handlers. By conducting thorough inspections, potential safety hazards and operational issues can be identified and addressed promptly, ensuring the continued safe and effective use of these heavy-duty machines.

Conducting Thorough Examinations for Container Handlers

During the inspection process, our competent engineer will dedicate approximately 90 minutes, possibly longer, to thoroughly inspect your Container Handler. Utilisation of a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) may be necessary to facilitate a comprehensive inspection, with operator assistance required towards the end of the inspection for assessing areas not visible from the driving position. This operational inspection includes critical components such as the steer axle, lights, load indicators, and load status lights, which are tested by locking onto a container weighing at least 50% of the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the equipment. The load is suspended briefly, and any descent exceeding 50mm in 5 minutes indicates a potential issue.

What happens during Container Handler inspection?

Our skilled engineer will require approximately 90 minutes, possibly longer, to inspect your equipment thoroughly. During the inspection, a MEWP will be utilised to facilitate a comprehensive examination. Towards the end of the inspection, operator assistance will be needed to inspect areas not visible from the driving position. This typically occurs towards the conclusion of the inspection, allowing the operator to take the equipment afterwards. Key inspection points include the steer axle, lights, load indicators, and load status lights, which necessitate locking onto a container weighing at least 50% of the Safe Working Load (SWL). The load will be suspended briefly by the equipment and should not descend more than 50mm in 5 minutes.

Why should a Thorough Examination be carried out?

Regular Thorough Examinations ensure the safety of operators and others in the environment. These inspections are typically required annually but may be needed every six months based on usage, conditions, or manufacturer recommendations. In addition to meeting legal obligations, combining the Thorough Examination with a PUWER inspection can enhance the truck’s longevity, ultimately saving time and money.
